About

The legendary rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans around 300 BC. Walk through the narrow Siq canyon to discover the iconic Treasury, the Monastery, and hundreds of tombs and temples.

Petra is one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites. Half-built, half-carved into rose-red rock, this ancient city was the thriving capital of the Nabataean Empire. Hidden from the Western world for centuries, it was revealed to Europeans in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Today it remains one of the New Seven Wonders of the World — and rightly so.
